Don't Buy the Cheapest Spectrum Analyzer — Here's What to Do Instead

After comparing six bids for a new spectrum analyzer last quarter, I learned something that surprised me: the cheapest option almost always costs more in the end. Here's how to avoid that trap.

I've managed test equipment procurement for a mid-sized electronics R&D lab for just over six years now. My annual budget for instrumentation runs about $120,000 to $150,000. Here's why. I ran the total cost of ownership (TCO) over three years, factoring in calibration, support contracts, and expected performance degradation. The used N9020B? Keysight offers a fixed-price calibration plan at $450 per year. Plus, its phase noise performance was specified at -140 dBc/Hz at 1 GHz, 10 kHz offset (that's from their datasheet, not marketing fluff). The cheap unit? They only specified phase noise at 10 kHz offset as 'better than -110 dBc/Hz.' For our project, that 30 dB difference meant the cheap analyzer couldn't distinguish low-level spurs near the carrier.

Total three-year TCO: cheap unit = $9,200 (including two emergency repair calls). Used N9020B = $16,050. New N9040B = $44,600. But the cheap unit failed in month 8, delaying our project by six weeks. The cost of that delay in engineering time and missed market window? Easily $50,000. Suddenly the 'cheap' option was the most expensive.

Why the Numbers Lie

What to Actually Do

When comparing spectrum analyzers, here's my checklist now:

  1. Check calibration costs — who does it, how often, and does it meet your quality standards? (For us, that means ISO 17025 accredited lab with traceability to NIST).
  2. Verify support availability — can you get someone on the phone within four hours? The cheap vendor I evaluated had an offshored support desk that took 48 hours to reply. For a production down situation, that's useless.
  3. Ask about firmware updates — are they free? Do they add features or only fix bugs? Keysight provides critical firmware updates for the N9020B through their software manager, free for the first three years.
  4. Test unit-to-unit repeatability — borrow or rent two units of the same model and compare measurements at the same frequency and amplitude. I've seen 0.3 dB differences between two units of the same 'identical' model from low‑cost brands. The N9020B MXAs I tested matched within 0.05 dB.
  5. Simulate your worst-case measurement — put your actual signal (or a simulated one) through the analyzer before committing. Our QAM signals with -60 dBm power levels were invisible on the cheap unit's noise floor. The N9020B recovered them cleanly.

I can only speak to my context — a mid-size R&D lab doing wireless product development. If you're a contract test house with high throughput and need full bandwidth analysis at 44 GHz, the calculus might be different. You might need the N9040B with its wider bandwidth and lower noise floor. But for most engineering teams evaluating signals up to 26.5 GHz with reasonable sensitivity, the N9020B MXA hits the sweet spot.

One More Thing

In 2022, we switched to Keysight's KeysightCare service contract. It costs about 5% of the instrument value per year, but it covers calibration, firmware updates, and priority support. I tracked every support incident for 18 months. Our average time to resolution dropped from 5 days to 2 hours. That alone was worth the cost, because the cost of an engineer waiting for a tool is way more expensive than any calibration plan.

This worked for us, but our situation was a predictable load with standard RF signals. Your mileage may vary if you're doing one-off research with exotic modulation schemes or if your lab handles mostly digital validation. In that case, a basic spectrum analyzer might be perfectly adequate.

If you ask me, the real question isn't how much you spend on the instrument. It's how much you spend not having the right one. The N9020B MXA isn't the cheapest option, but in my experience, it's the one that causes the fewest headaches down the road. Period.
